Residents of Siolim-Marna have strongly opposed the construction of multi-dwelling projects in the village, voicing concerns over the strain such developments place on local resources and the environment.
At a recent gram sabha, villagers raised several issues, urging the panchayat to take immediate action.
Local resident Joaquim Barros questioned the panchayat on the implementation of a resolution passed at the last gram sabha to curtail mega projects in the area. He highlighted the pressure on water and electricity caused by these developments, particularly those with multiple independent swimming pools.
Barros cited a new project in his ward that reportedly includes nearly 20 swimming pools, raising fears of groundwater contamination and unsustainable resource use.
Sarpanch Sandesh Hadfadkar responded, acknowledging that approvals for such projects are granted by the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department and other agencies, leaving the panchayat little choice but to issue no-objection certificates (NOCs).
However, he assured residents that the panchayat would prioritise the villagers’ interests and address their concerns.
Villagers also raised alarms over unauthorised hill cutting and tree felling in several parts of the village, urging stricter oversight and environmental protection.
Concerns about water and power shortages were voiced, with residents requesting the panchayat to take up the matter with the relevant government departments.
Barros emphasised the need for better coordination between the panchayat, the village development committee and government authorities to ensure responsible planning and approval of projects.
Other issues discussed included the increasing problem of stray cattle, poor road conditions and improper sewage discharge.
The gram sabha concluded with residents reiterating their demand for sustainable development and a commitment from local authorities to safeguard the village’s environmental and infrastructural integrity.
