1 arrested in burglary at Australian tourist’s villa in Calangute

A youth from Shimoga-Karnataka has been arrested in connection with a burglary at an Australian tourist’s villa in Gaurawaddo-Calangute.

Calangute Police said the incident had taken place on November 16, when Ashley Backman, an Australian tourist, lodged a complaint with Calangute police stating that the burglary had taken place when he and his family were not in the villa.

Three laptops, a watch and cash of Rs 25,000 and foreign currency, all worth Rs 3.25 lakh, were burgled from the house.

The face of the accused, D M Santosha (27), was captured in CCTV footage at the premises.

During investigation, Calangute police got information that the suspected accused had gone to his native village after the burglary. A police team was dispatched to Shimoga and he was nabbed and brought back to Goa. Stolen items worth Rs 3 lakh were recovered from the accused.

Police said Santosha is accused in thefts across various parts of the country.

A police team led by PSI Yogesh Mandrekar conducted the operations under the guidance of Police Inspector Paresh Naik.
