MLA irked over P'yat delay in approaching High Court after decision taken long ago

MARGAO

A visibly agitated Benaulim  MLA Venzy Viegas trained  his guns at the Benaulim Sarpanch Xavier Pereira, demanding to know why the Panchayat has been delaying in knocking at the doors of the High Court.

He further said the Sarpanch ought to have been here now to give the guarantee to the people that there isn’t going to be flooding at Pedda.

“Instead of issuing press statements, the Sarpanch should show  guts and come  here and talk to the people and give the guarantee that there will not be flooding. Why are the people of Pedda afraid, let us call the Sarpanch here and tell him to give us the guarantee”,  he said.

The Benaulim MLA demanded to know from a ward panchayat member why the Panchayat has still not gone to the court when a decision was taken in that respect long ago. The Panchayat member replied that the lawyer roped in by the Panchayat has insisted on a hydrology report before taking a call on going to the court.

The Panch member said the Panchayat is in possession of other reports and is now waiting for the hydrology report to take further action. The Panchayat member further pointed out that Panchayat need the permission to spend the funds since the hydrology report will cost the panchayat around Rs 11 lakh.

Venzy, however, shot back saying the lawyer had insisted on the hydrology report long ago, pointing out that funds need to be spent wherever necessary in the interest of the people.
