PERNEM
The departments seized 11 boats and 300 cubic metres sand at Naikawaddo-Torsem, while another 3 boats were seized at Fakirpata-Torsem.
Speaking to reporters, Pernem Deputy Collector Girish Adkonkar said the government has declared Torsem-Pernem a ‘no sand extraction zone’ and added that there has been a total ban on sand extraction since the last 2-3 days.
“However, illegal sand mining is openly carried out at these places in huge quantities. If such things continue, then strict action will be taken,” warned Adkonkar.
Deputy Director of Captain of Ports Premlal Shirsaikar said the sand mafia is generally tipped before any raid is conducted.
“Keeping this in mind, we planned a surprise raid without informing any one,” informed Shirsaikar.
The Caption of Ports seized all the boats and deployed police force near the seized boats, while about 300 cubic metres sand that was seized by the department was handed over to Pernem Police and it was sealed.
The Captain of Ports and Coastal Police are investigating the matter.
