In a security lapse, a person arrested by Vasco police on charges of theft on Thursday morning managed to flee from GMC after a medical examination later in the evening.
Two constables who were accompanying the accused at the GMC hospital have been suspended in this connection.
Vasco police station has already issued a lookout notice for the accused, P Ramesh Subayya, (50), a native of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, who was arrested in a theft case under Sections 379 and 427 IPC.
The police have also started a manhunt and are also keeping watch on various places like bus stands and railway stations, besides setting up naka bandi arrangements at many locations.
"The accused had allegedly broken the glass of a parked car near the Mormugao Municipal Council in broad daylight and fled with cash of Rs 2.5 lakh, after following the businessman who had just withdrawn money from the bank in February,” said a source.
“The owner later filed a police complaint and the police had already begun an investigation based on CCTV footage. The same owner found the accused standing near Karnataka Bank on Thursday morning and immediately caught him before he tried to run from the location and handed him over to the Vasco police for further investigation.”
Vasco police later arrested the accused and took him for a medical examination at Chicalim cottage hospital and further to GMC, since the accused had a plaster on his leg.
“Two Vasco police constables had taken the accused for a medical examination at the GMC hospital and while the constables were taking some details of the medical examination, the accused took advantage of the situation and escaped from the GMC," said the source.
Following this lapse in security, Mormugao DySP Salim Shaikh Shaikh said the two Vasco police constables Gaurish Satardekar and Ashok Adur, who had accompanied the accused to the GMC for a medical checkup, have been suspended in this connection.
