The Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) has disposed of 24 pending cases through expedited hearings and inquiries since taking charge, providing relief in matters related to child
welfare and protection.
When the Commission assumed office, 46 cases were pending before it. During March, April and May, six new cases were received, taking the total number of matters under consideration to 52.
The cases addressed by the Commission included complaints related to corporal punishment, child custody disputes, family conflicts, physical and emotional abuse, mental harassment, trauma, neglect and educational concerns.
The Commission has also taken cognisance of the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions and has directed authorities to take action as per the law.
Adoption-related matters were reviewed, with concerned agencies instructed to ensure timely disposal in the best interests of children. The GSCPCR has also recommended setting up Village Child Committees and Municipal Child Committees under the Goa Children’s Act to strengthen community-based child protection systems.
The Commission intervened in matters related to the implementation of the National Education Policy and sought steps to reduce academic pressure on students. It has also taken up issues concerning separate toilets for boys and girls, functional water facilities in schools, and menstrual health and hygiene awareness among adolescent girls.
The GSCPCR said it will continue working with stakeholders to create a safe and child-friendly environment across Goa.
