PORVORIM
Sending out a message that all three panchayats in his Porvorim constituency must be clean and green, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has advised all three panchayats of Penha de Franca, Socorro and Salvador do Mundo to collect, segregate and dispose of wet garbage.
He was speaking after performing a pooja of garbage management equipment and electric rickshaws in the presence of Penha de Franca Sarpanch Manisha Naik, Dy Sarpanch Shalu Gupta, panch members Sham Kamat, Swapnil Chodankar, Gurudas Vernekar and ZP member Kavita Naik.
“The Penha de Franca panchayat got 1,000 sq mtrs of land from Goa Housing Board on lease basis and constructed a shed. The panchayat started collecting garbage on a door-to-door basis by appointing a contractor and began segregating the garbage,” said Khaunte.
“On the basis of this performance, the State government offered panchayat garbage management equipment like baling machine, slotting machine, sorting tables, two crushers (one for plastic and second for hard materials) and three electric rickshaws for collection of the garbage.”
“This equipment and three electric rickshaws supplied by the State government will be of great help to the panchayat,” said Khaunte.
Stating that he wanted to take garbage management to the next level, Khaunte said the Penha de Franca panchayat has started constructing a digestor to convert waste into energy.
“If this system of collection, segregation, disposal of garbage and generation of manure and energy becomes successful, I will replicate it in Socorro and Salvador do Mundo panchayats. What is required is the support of the people,” said Khaunte.
Sarpanch Manisha Naik said dry garbage is segregated at the shed, while wet garbage is sent to the Saligao garbage plant.
