All four gates of the Anjunem Dam were opened on Wednesday morning to discharge excess water from the reservoir.

Authorities have alerted people residing along the river banks that water levels in the Valvanti river would rise with water being discharged from the Dam

According to Anjunem Dam Assistant Engineer Dilip Gaonkar, water level at the Anjunem Dam reached 90 metres at about 10 am and it was then decided to release the excess water by opening the gates as a precautionary measure.

“If rains continue, we will have to continue releasing water from the reservoir. People residing along the river banks have been alerted and notices have also been sent to all panchayats concerned,” said Gaonkar.

Special officers have been appointed round the clock to monitor the overall levels of the Anjunem Dam.

The officials will monitor the total rainfall and water levels and if necessary, some gates of the dam may be closed.

“Last year, water was released from the gates on August 8 and 9. With less rainfall during the initial period, there was a possibility that it would take a longer time to fill the reservoir of the dam this year. However, due to heavy rains in the last eight days, the reservoir filled quickly and is now full, compelling us to release the excess water,” said Gaonkar.
