A house at Agonda which was once the centre of attention in a Konkani film was severely damaged when a coconut tree came crashing down on the structure.
Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Canacona, with several incidents of flooding and uprooting of trees reported in different parts of the taluka.
A coconut tree fell down on an old and unoccupied house at Dessaiwada, Agonda, damaging the house to a great extent.
The house had gained prominence as a heritage house in Rajendra Talak’s 2010 Konkani film “O Maria” and the story revolved around the preservation of Goan heritage and opposition to selling of Goan homes to foreign nationals for monetary benefits.
According to sources, the house situated in Devabhag in Dessaiwada-Agonda is in the land belonging to Shri Mallikarjun Devalaya and is presently under the care of a family member (reportedly based in Mumbai) of the owners, Xavier and Carmina Fernandes. The coconut tree is, however, not yet cleared from the house.
A large mango tree also fell down in the recently cultivated paddy fields at Khangim, Agonda, on Wednesday morning. The uprooted tree also brought down a recently laid OFC pipeline out in the open.
The uprooted huge mango tree lying on the Panna-Church road in Agonda, which is one of two big mango trees by the roadside, came crashing down towards the paddy fields and not on the road.
According to Canacona Fire services, the firemen have been on their toes since Tuesday midnight attending to tree-falling calls all over the taluka.
Fire personnel had to rush on Tuesday midnight as a tree came down blocking the road and damaging electricity alignment at Shiroti in Khola village. At about 4.30 am on Wednesday, another tree also fell on the electricity line and road near Masjid at Tembewada, while at about 7.30 am, a coconut tree fell on a house at Colomb, near the Pagi Samaj hall.
Fire personnel also cleared a tree which fell on the road at Dumne on the way to Agonda and later had to rush back to cut and clear a tree that fell on a cowshed at Char-Rasta Bhikarwada. Another tree fell on a house at Chaudi-Canacona.
A tree had fallen on the Delem road and was cleared by fire personnel, before rushing to Sadolxem to clear another tree that came crashing down on the road. They went back to Ponsulem by afternoon time to cut and clear another tree that fell damaging electricity line on the road.
Meanwhile, Canacona taluka has crossed over 92 inches of rainfall, while the Chapoli Dam with storage of 38.35 RL (reduced level) is also reaching close to its brim (38.75 RL) before it overflows at its spillway.
