Beefless Saturday for Saxttikars

beef traders down their shutters, say no point in keeping stalls open when there is no beef supply

Beefless Saturday for Saxttikars
MARGAO
Beef traders in the commercial capital downed their shutters at the Gandhi and SGPDA markets in protest against the continuous raids on imported beef in the state by some outstation organizations and activists causing them huge losses.
Agitated beef traders contended there's no point in keeping the stalls open with no beef supply coming either from the Goa Meat Complex or from across the border in Karnataka because of
the raids conducted by the activists.
They pointed out that beef traders hav
e sustained huge losses after "self-styled" activists indulged in destroying meat by pouring phenyl over consignments. "While the Goa Meat Complex stands closed for over four months now, they are now trying to stop the import of beef from across the border on flimsy grounds like consignment being not accompanied by proper
documentation," the traders said.
As the stalls remained closed for the day, two different groups of delegation called on the TCP Minister and Salcete's lone Minister Vijai Sardesai seeking his intervention to stop the ongoing raids and ensure resumption in the supply of beef.
After giving the beef traders a patient hearing, the TCP Minister spoke to the Chief Minister with a plea to give an audience to the beef traders around noon and also take into consideration the involvement of some activists in conducting raids on the imported beef.
