Benjamin wants Arlekar to do rethink on coconut tree reclassification

MARGAO: Apparently feeling the heat over the controversy surrounding the reclassification of coconut tree, Independent MLA Benjamin D’Silva, who is supporting the BJP-led government, on Monday said he has suggested to Forest Minister Rajendra Arlekar to explore the possibility of a rethink on the amendment in the coming Assembly session.
Speaking to the media outside the Margao court building, Benjamin said he has brought to the notice of the Forest Minister on Monday the general public sentiments against the government decision on the coconut tree. “I have told the Forest Minister as well as the Chief Minister to change the amendment in the coming Assembly session. The government says the amendment conforms to the Law, but I have drawn the attention to the opposition from the people at large and go by public suggestions,” Benjamin said.
Asked whether the coconut tree issue will affect Legislators like him, who are supporting the ruling government, Benjamin said any issue which does not go well with the public at large is bound to have an impact on the politicians. “When the people are objecting the amendment, I feel the government should go by the voice and sentiments of the people. The government should act as per the sentiments of the people,” he said, adding that the issue will blow over once the government brings the necessary changes to the Law.
On the proposed Maad Yatra in his Velim constituency on coming Sunday, Benjamin reminded that people enjoy the freedom to take any decision in a democracy.
