BICHOLIM
The body of 17-year-old Deep Bagkar of Dhargal-Pernem was retrieved from the Tillari canal at Usap-Nanora on Monday morning.
Deep Bagkar had drowned after he was carried away by the water current in the Tillari canal, while in a separate incident a teenager from Panaji had drowned in a stone quarry in the same village on the same day.
A Bicholim fire brigade and locals had conducted search and rescue operations until Sunday evening, but they were unable to locate the body of Bagkar.
On Monday morning, Tillari dam officials reduced the flow of water into the canal and the fire brigade later spotted and retrieved the body of the youth.
The body was later handed over to the Bicholim police for further investigation.
According to sources, a group of about four to five persons had gone to a farm in Nanora on Sunday afternoon.
The Tillari canal passes through one side of the farm and water flows with considerable force.
Bagkar got caught in the strong flow of the water and his friends tried to rescue him, but he was dragged away.
