Porvorim police have arrested a native of Karnataka on charges of duping bank to the tune of Rs 8 lakh by using identification proofs of a dead person.
Addressing a news conference on Thursday, North Goa SP Nidhin Valsan said the accused, Dilip B R (32) of Dharwad-Karnataka had been on the run and had allegedly committed similar crimes in various parts of Karnataka by cheating several banks to the tune of Rs 72 lakh.
The branch manager at the Socorro Branch of Punjab National Bank at Porvorim had complained to Porvorim Police stating that on November 16, 2021, an unknown accused male person and an unknown female accused had approached the bank and had submitted an application for a vehicle loan along with fake quotation a car dealer in Panaji and other forged/fake documents by impersonating themselves as Shamantak Subrao Kadekodi and Kavita Munibasavraj.
The vehicle loan amounting to Rs 8 lakh was sanction for the purchase of a car and produced a fake insurance copy showing hypothecation to PNB Bank. The offence was registered on July 25, 2022.
During investigation, it was revealed that the accused person had used identity proofs of dead persons from Karnataka.
Further investigation revealed that the accused had sold the car to another person at Belagavi and the car was seized from Belagavi.
The accused was on the run and had allegedly committed similar crimes in various parts of Karnataka and a total fraud of Rs 72 lakh had been allegedly committed by him by cheating several banks.
Finally with the assistance of Karnataka Police, the accused Dilip B R (32) of Dharwad was arrested and a team of Goa Police brought the accused person to Goa and placed him under arrest.
The accused person is also alleged to have cheated the Indian Overseas Bank at Porvorim Branch with a similar modus operandi by submitting fake documents and a second FIR is also registered.
SP Valsan said the accused person is highly qualified and had completed his BTech in Mechanical Engineering.
Police have obtained a four-day remand for the accused and are also in process of arresting his wife, who has been identified as Priti Manjunath of Dharwad.
The investigation was supervised by SP North Nidhin Valsan, SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe and the team consisted of PI Anant Gaonkar, PSI Pratik Bhat Prabhu, Constables Yogesh Shinde, Tushar Raut and others.
