500-car parking hub, smart roads in beach village’s redevelopment drive
Calangute, Goa’s tourism showpiece known for its crowded streets, tangled overhead wires and chaotic parking, is set for a sweeping transformation that promises to redefine the face of the State’s most visited beach destination.
In a major push towards urban renewal, development works worth nearly Rs 25 crore have begun across the Calangute constituency, with plans ranging from underground utility corridors and modern drainage systems to beautified streetscapes and a proposed multi-level parking facility capable of accommodating around 500 vehicles.
For residents and tourists accustomed to traffic snarls and infrastructure strain during peak seasons, the project signals an ambitious attempt to convert the bustling beach belt into a cleaner, smarter and more organised tourism hub.
Inaugurating the projects, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo described the initiative as a necessary step for a constituency that contributes significantly to Goa’s tourism-driven economy.
“Since Calangute is a tourism destination, we need to give the best to the beach village,” Lobo said, adding that the vision was not to create “something extraordinary” but to make the area more presentable to both locals and visitors and give it a distinct “wow factor.”
At the centre of the redevelopment blueprint is a proposal for a multi-level parking complex aimed at easing one of Calangute’s biggest urban challenges – chronic parking shortages and traffic congestion.
The facility, once completed, is expected to streamline vehicle movement in the crowded tourist belt, especially during holidays and peak tourist months when roads frequently witness gridlocks.
The makeover, however, goes beyond traffic management.
Authorities plan to shift overhead electricity and internet cables underground through RCC utility service corridors, a move expected to dramatically improve the skyline and reduce visual clutter across the beach village.
Simultaneously, new drains and cross-drain systems will be constructed to improve rainwater flow and tackle flooding concerns during the monsoon.
Footpaths paved with designer pavers, installation of signboards and painting of building facades are also part of the extensive beautification drive aimed at giving Calangute a uniform and modern appearance.
The works are being implemented in phases through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), with officials acknowledging that the construction activity may temporarily inconvenience residents and businesses.
Lobo appealed to the public to cooperate during the execution phase, stressing that the long-term gains would outweigh the short-term disruptions.
He also expressed confidence that the transformation of Calangute could become a model for other coastal constituencies in Goa seeking similar tourism-oriented infrastructure upgrades.
Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira, former sarpanch Shawn Martins and other local leaders were present during the inauguration ceremony.
