It is well known that the unprecedented floods in Kerala have caused immeasurable destruction and even loss of several lives, resulting in thousands of families losing their homes, livestock and even land.
The Catholic community of this Archdiocese responded generously to the call made by the Archbishop to extend their solidarity with the victims of the natural disaster, both in prayer and in monetary assistance. As an initial gesture of solidarity, Rs. 20 Lakhs were sent from the Archdiocesan Fund to Caritas India, which is directly coordinating with the local diocesan social service societies to see that the assistance in cash and kind reaches the genuine victims of the disaster.
In the field, Caritas India provided immediate relief assistance to the tune of Rs. 1 Core. A formidable combination of nine teams of Joint Rapid Needs Assessment (JRNA) have been coordinating with leaders of Community-based Organizations (CBOs) and Panchayat representatives as well as Government officials to bring succour to lakhs of people.
The Kerala Social Service Forum (KSSF) is closely coordinating with its 24 Diocesan Social Service Societies, managing relief materials coming from different sources.
The response of faithfuls to the appeal of the Archbishop has been quite encouraging. Till date Caritas Goa has received Rs. 60 Lakhs from individuals, parishes and organizations.
Some parishes are still making collections for the purpose. People and institutions wishing to still avail of the facility are welcome to make their cheques or NEFT transfers in favour of Caritas-Goa Emergency Calamities, A/c 520101219522622, Corporation Bank, Panaji Branch (IFSC Code “ CORP0000259, MICR Code “ 403017002), with a note that the amount is towards Kerala Disaster.
