Cases booked, fines collected for defying anti-tobacco norms

The Enforcement Squad for Mormugao taluka on Wednesday booked 41 cases and collected Rs 8,500 in fines during inspections in Headland-Sada and Vasco city area, as part of efforts to implement the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade, Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003 in South Goa.

The establishments booked included restaurants, pharmacies, sweet marts, bars, grocery shops and banks for not complying with Section 4 which covers the ban on smoking in a public place and the requirement to display no-smoking sign boards.
Some establishments were also booked for violating Section 6 (A) which prohibits the sale of tobacco products to minors and non-display of the mandatory signs.
The Mormugao Enforcement Squad led by Nathan Afonso, Joint Mamlatdar II, along with GOACAN volunteers, staff from the Mamlatdar’s office and police personnel from Vasco Police took part in the exercise.
The enforcement drive, which is a part of the ongoing campaign for observation of World No Tobacco Day in South Goa district, will cover other areas of Mormugao taluka in due course of time.

Pontoon: Alina talks tough on its removal

Stating that the contractor responsible for the removal of the pontoon has to pull the grounded vessel ashore at Arossim by 6 pm on June 2, Cortalim MLA and RDA Minister Alina Saldanha said that in the event of any failure to remove it the government would step in to do the needful.
