Chief Electoral Officer targeted in cyber impersonation scam

PANAJI

A day after Legislature Secretary Namrata Ulman became a target of cyber fraud, Chief Electoral Officer Ramesh Verma also fell victim to an impersonator.

Verma’s PA, Umita Bhandari, lodged a complaint stating that an unknown person, using WhatsApp number +9779826581139, impersonated Verma by using his name and photo (on the WhatsApp DP).

The complaint further states that the impersonator subsequently sought financial favours from people in Verma’s contact list. The incident occurred on April 15, prompting a complaint to the Cyber Crime Cell, which registered an offence under Section 66-C (identity theft) of the IT Act.

On Monday, the Porvorim Police registered an offence to a complaint alleging an unidentified person hacked Ulman’s phone and impersonated her to request money from her contacts, and directed that funds be transferred to different bank accounts. This particular case is registered under Section 419 (impersonation) IPC and Section 66“C of the IT Act.
