The Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) released the “Code of Conduct for Physical Education Teachers and Sports Coaches in Goa” - containing comprehensive guidelines to ensure a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for youth athletes.
The document, Chairperson Peter Borges said, includes specific provisions for the prevention of child sexual abuse such as obligatory background checks, child protection training, and explicit reporting procedures.
“These measures are designed to prevent abuse and guarantee prompt, effective responses to any incidents, underscoring the urgent need for action in light of reported abuses. This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to the safety of children and the promotion of an environment free from abuse where children can flourish,” he said, in a press statement issued on Tuesday.
The Code also encompasses a broad spectrum of topics -- encouraging best practices, averting poor practices, providing practical guidance, maintaining confidentiality, and defining the duties of educators and coaches. It applies to all physical education instructors and sports coaches operating within the State’s jurisdiction and will be enforced by the Directorate of Education, the Directorate of Youth and Sports Affairs, and the Sports Authority of Goa.
“This initiative highlights the Commission’s commitment to the comprehensive development of children, recognizing the important role of sports and education. It calls on all stakeholders to embrace and implement these guidelines, thereby positioning sports and physical education as vital contributors to the development of youth,” he said.
