Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said 12 Multipurpose Cyclone Shelters (MPCS) are being constructed in the State at a cost of Rs 3 crore each, of which two cyclone shelters have been completed.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the State’s second MPCS at Pilerne and laying the foundation stone for the 30 MLD water treatment plant, Sawant said the remaining 10 MPCS are in completion stage.
“Besides being used during disasters, these MPCS should also be used for other purposes and the respective local bodies should take the responsibility to maintain them.”
“These cyclone shelters can be used by self-help groups and for tourists on rental basis. The revenue generated from these initiatives can be utilised to pay water and electricity bills as well as for maintenance,” said Sawant.
Others present on the occasion included WRD Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues, Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo, former Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar, Saligao Sarpanch Lafira Gomes, North Goa ZP President Kartik Kudnekar and panch members of Calangute and Saligao panchayats.
Commenting on the 30 MLD water treatment plant, Lobo said residents of Calangute, Candolim, Pilerne, Saligao, Reis Magos, Nerul, Siolim and adjoining areas have been facing acute water shortage of water.
“The Water Resources Department not only quickly identified land for this 30 MLD water treatment plant but also prepared estimates, got the approval, tendered the work and expedited the work order,” said Lobo.
“Once this project is completed, the water problems in areas along this coastal belt will be reduced considerably. The Assnora treatment plant also needs to be upgraded.”
“Besides, areas located on the coastal belt face power outages and hence, there is a need to set up a sub-station at Saligao to ensure uninterrupted power supply,” said Lobo.
WRD Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues said the State government has adopted the State Water Policy 2021 keeping in mind the water requirement for the next 50 years.
He said the WRD has taken up several projects, which include rejuvenation of River Sal, Malkarnem Lift Irrigation project and the Water Treatment Plant at Porvorim. Former Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar also spoke at the event.
