Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday expressed concern over the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the state and across the country as well as violations of Covid safety protocols in public areas. Ironically, in the same breath, he dismissed the possibility of imposing a ‘Janata Curfew’ in Goa or any travel restrictions at the borders or within the state.

CM Sawant was speaking after attending a videoconference of all the Chief Ministers and governors of Union Territories convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan to review the rise in Covid cases as well as the progress of the Covid vaccination programme in the country.

“PM Modi sought reviews from the CMs of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab before expressing concern over the rising number of Covid cases in the country. He sought to know the reasons for the spike in various regions, progress of the vaccination programme and wastage, whether the private sector has been onboarded and explained the next course of action. PM has suggested the setting up of mini containment zones if the need be,” CM Sawant said.

CM Sawant further stated that stress was also laid on the need to enhance testing across the country on a large scale. “As per the number of cases and trends in each state, state governments have been told to decide as per their situation,” he informed.

However, CM Sawant said that upon discussing the matter with Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, Goa government has ruled out the need for a Janata curfew and other restrictions on travel.

“We have decided to enhance testing drastically. I request everyone to use hand sanitizers, face masks and to observe social distancing at all times and also to visit the nearest health centre in case of symptoms. Tourists visiting Goa should compulsorily follow these Covid safety protocols and to get tested in case of any symptoms,” he said.

CM explained that no restrictions shall be enforced along Goa’s borders yet.

“I will issue instructions to the administration again to tighten the implementation of these safety norms in public places through the imposition of fines,” he stated.

It was learned that during the VC, PM Modi voiced serious concern over another Covid outbreak in the country and urged all the CMs and governors to take decisive and immediate steps to prevent a second wave.
