MARGAO: Refusing to accept a bouquet of flowers wrapped in a plastic foil at the inauguration of the
Shiroda Urban Co-operative Credit Society branch at Benaulim, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on
Monday mulled banning use of plastic bags in the state after setting a time frame.
"I have stopped using plastic bags. That's the reason why I did not accept the flower bouquet wrapped
in plastic bag. Plastic waste has only aggravated the problem of garbage management in the state", he
said.
The Chief Minister said that garbage is not a big problem to manage, but hastened to add that plastic
waste has only worsened the problem. "With plastic waste staring at the state, the time has now come
to stop the menace after giving a time frame", he said.
Earlier, the Chief Minister urged the Credit Cooperative society to go into micro credit financing not only
to do good business, but serve the people in need of loans. He cited the instance of a nationalized bank,
which had started giving loans to trawler owners and fishermen during the ban period, that had
benefited the bank and the boat owners.
He pointed out that some of the cooperative credit societies are facing problems for want of prudent
policies.
In his brief address, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai said the time has come for the Shiroda credit
cooperative society to move to North Goa as well which has not been served by the credit societies.
In his address, Shiroda MLA Subhash Shirodkar said the Shiroda cooperative credit society has earned a
name in the market as evident by the society's deposits touching a whopping Rs 70 crore.
Society Chairman Abkar Mulla, former MLA Benjamin D'Silva, Benaulim Sarpanch Diella Pereira, ZP
Member Maria Rebello and others were present.
