The Congress on Wednesday criticised the BJP-led administration over its failure to resolve the problems faced by traditional fish vendors at the newly constructed Vasco Fish Market Complex.
Congress leader Nandadeep Raut visited the market, interacted with the vendors and assured them of the party's support.
Giving the authorities a one-week deadline, Raut warned that the Congress would launch a major agitation if the drainage and other issues affecting the market were not resolved.
Raut said the fish market project was close to his heart as he had initiated the process during his tenure as Chairperson of the Mormugao Municipal Council.
"I was the MMC Chairperson in 2017-18 and had transferred the funds to GSUDA for the construction of the new fish market. The government is a continuous process and the new council took the project forward. However, despite several inspections by Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, the vendors continue to suffer. Even a layman can understand that this is a drainage issue. Why were technical officials not called during these inspections? Instead of inspections meant for photography and social media, the focus should be on providing a permanent solution," Raut said.
He further questioned the quality of the newly built market and said the authorities had failed to address the vendors' genuine concerns.
"This is barely a six-month-old project, yet it is already facing serious problems. The market has an unbearable stench and neither vendors nor customers can function in such conditions. GSUDA and the administration have done a shabby job, and the MLA must immediately ensure that the defects are rectified," he added.
Issuing a stern warning, Raut said the Congress would not remain silent if the grievances continued to be ignored.
"I am giving the authorities one week's time. If the issues are not resolved or if any attempt is made to harass the vendors, the Congress will launch a massive agitation and even block roads in Vasco. The responsibility for such a situation will rest entirely with the MLA and the government," Raut said.
