Cortalim hill cutting: Alina directs Verna police to maintain vigil at site

CORTALIM

Stating that she will not tolerate violation of law, and that too pertaining to environment, RDA Minister and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha said she had instructed the Verna Police Inspector to maintain round-the-clock vigil at the mud extraction site on Cortalim comunidade land at Consua in Cortalim.

“I have instructed the Verna Police Inspector to maintain a 24-hour vigil at the site for at least 15 days to ensure that no hill cutting takes place,” Saldanha told The Goan.

On Friday, the Verna police moved the shovel out of the site which has now been parked away from the site on the state highway.

As reported in The Goan, the Mormugao Dy Collector has also issued a stop-work notice on the Cortalim Comunidade land and directed the Verna police to halt work.

Meanwhile, Saldanha informed The Goan that she recently convened a meeting with the power department and the Goa State Co-operative Bank officials pertaining to water and power bills, which the Cortalim branch of the bank had stopped accepting since February.

“The bank was being paid Rs 1.50 per bill, but is now demanding Rs 15 per bill, which is quite steep. So they are yet to arrive on a consensus figure, and a meeting will be held shortly to solve the issue. So, also the new software will be put in place,” Saldanha informed.
