Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said his credibility in Goa was important to him and assured to stick to promises made to Goans.

Interacting with fishermen at Velsao, Gandhi said the commitments made to people in the manifesto were not just commitments but a guarantee.

"Unlike many other leaders, my credibility is important to me so if I say something here in Goa, I will ensure that it happens. Otherwise, if I come here and I say that we will not allow a coal hub in Goa and I don't do it, the next time I come here, I will have no credibility," said Gandhi

"We fought an election in Chhattisgarh and made a promise to farmers that their loans would be waived off and we did it. You can ask the same question in Karnataka and Punjab as well,” said Gandhi.

"I love the sea in Goa and sometimes when my mother is not well, she comes here and she takes the benefit of your beautiful climate and environment. There are thousands across India who love the sea and environment here in Goa.”

“That is why we are not only protecting the environment for the sake of Goa but for all of us and I am here to make clear commitments on behalf of the Congress party," said Gandhi.

During the interaction, the Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) and other members of the fishing community put forth issues faced by fishermen before Gandhi at Velsao beach.

Fuel taxes highest in world

Claiming that fuel taxes in India were among the highest in the world which had led to a fuel hike, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the fuel hike and the proposed coal hub in Goa would benefit around 4-5 businessmen in India.

"When the UPA government was in power, international fuel prices had reached 140 USD a barrel but today the price in the international fuel prices are much lower and yet we pay much more for fuel.”

“You should understand that India’s fuel taxes are among the highest in the world. We have to ask ourselves where is the money going, to whom is this money going and who are the people benefiting by the coal hub here in Goa.”

“If we look closely and carefully, we will find that they are the same 4-5 businessmen who are benefiting from all of this," said Gandhi.
