Curtorim locals up ante against mobile tower, stop work

MARGAO
After Sao Jose de Areal, Dramapur, Assolna and Chinchinim, residents of Virabhat and Fondegal in Curtorim village are up in arms over the erection of a mobile tower at government primary school close to a residential area.

The residents have submitted a signed memorandum to the Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco and have entered the memorandum in the office of the Curtorim panchayat office to initiate action against the proposed tower.

The residents pointed out that the tower has been proposed in a residential area, expressing concern that the tower may pose a health hazard to the residents.

Saying that towers can be very hazardous and pose health related problems to the residents, they have urged the authorities to stop the tower in a residential locality.

Sources pointed out that the residents had got the contractor to stop the work after the site was excavated for the laying of the foundation. The residents are also believed to have called on the MLA as well as the panchayat body with a plea to stop the erection of the tower  in the residential locality.

The mobile companies have been going about the erection of towers on government land, including land belonging to the PWD, Education departments, Sports, etc citing the Goa IT Infrastructure policy, which does not require obtaining permissions from the local bodies for construction of the towers.
