Former MMC chairperson Ganashyam Shirodkar is the lone independent member in the 25-member Margao Municipal Council, but his name has been repeatedly doing the rounds as the strong contender for the top post.
Pose him with a question over his plans to contest the election for the MMC chairperson’s post and Ganashyam makes no bones of the fact that he is not averse in taking on the candidate fielded by the Margao MLA.
Many questions, however, remain unanswered “ how will the former MMC chairperson reach the magic figure of 13 when he is considered an independent councillor in the civic body. Whether he would manage to rally behind him the councillors in the MCA who are opposed to Damu Shirodkar’s candidature? Or, whether he hopes to garner the support of his friends and well-wishers in the BJP, Goa Forward and Model Margao to return back to the saddle once again.
How the former MMC chairperson will go about seeking support to his candidature remains unknown, but he is believed to have got the backing of a couple of councillors from the BJP, Goa Forward and Kamat’s Model Margao. What, however, remains to be seen is whether Ganashyam will throw his hat in the ring with the support of these councillors when the three major groups may have different agenda in the ensuing polls.
