PANAJI: The DNA report of the vest allegedly belonging to Bismarque Dias found at a location more than 50 metres from the site where he was last seen and his body found has reported no blood stains or other DNA ruling out the possibility of extracting DNA from the vest.
“We have received the DNA report from CFSL Hyderabad. No blood has been found from any of the exhibit (vest or mud samples) sent. Therefore no DNA could be taken. In short the red marks were not blood stains on the vest,” SP Crime Branch Kartik Kashyap has said.
Questions, however, remain on whether the vest did actually belong to Bismarque Dias and as also on whether it was deliberately planted at the spot to mislead the investigation.
Speaking on the issue, DIG V Renganathan, who has recently been promoted to the post of IGP, said that the police were more concerned whether this would offer any clues to the circumstances surrounding Bismarque’s death.
“We are exploring all angles and had called for evidence. This piece was handed over to us and we examined it. But it has not offered any clues,” he said.
Sources have informed The Goan, that the family was inching towards holding a funeral in the weeks after his demise but kept their plans on hold after the discovery of the vest, leading to speculation that the vest was planted in a bid to delay the funeral and keep the case alive.
The DIG replied in the negative when asked whether a separate inquiry would be initiated to probe how the vest landed on the river bank and who it belonged to.
The vest was found by activist Kennedy Afonso who visited the village as part of his own investigations and handed it over to the police.
Afonso, however, has refused to believe the theory that Dias died of accidental drowning.
“If it is not blood, what is it? To the naked eye it looks like blood. The report and the police are surprisingly silent on what it is. Fr Bismarque’s sister-in-law has said that she used to wash the vest herself and that it was not there and came later,” he said.
He said he is convinced that the investigation being conducted by the police will not result in ‘anything.’
“I am convinced that this investigation will not go any further. Nothing will happen. This is very fishy and is not surprising,” he said. The boys have been interrogated separately and cross examined, but have not offered any clue to indicate that it was a murder.
Till date there isn’t anything to indicate that Fr Bismarque was murdered with the two post mortem reports -- one by a single doctor and another by a team of doctors -- indicating that all the injuries noticed on the body took place after he had passed away as the body floated about and that there was no ante mortem injuries on the body. The chemical analysis of the viscera ruled out the theory that he was drugged or poisoned to death, while the diatom test has ruled out the possibility of him being killed in another place and his body later dumped at the spot where it was found.
