Don't reserve my ward as 'ST': Mormugao councillor

VASCO

Objecting to attempts to reserve Ward 7 of Mormugao Municipal Council for the ST community, Councillor Sharad (Nitin) Chopedkar has threatened to seek legal recourse in the matter.

In a letter to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA), Chopedkar stated that the census had revealed that Wards 5 and 9 have a higher percentage of SC/ST and OBC communities.

“As such, one of these two wards should be reserved for any of these communities. Ward 7 does not have 5% of its population nor voters as ST,” said Chopdekar.

Chopedkar has requested the DMA not to declare Ward 7 as ST, and instead, to reserve the ward under general category.

Chopedkar, who is planning to contest the next council election from Ward 7, has warned DMA that if Ward 7 is reserved for the ST community, he would be forced to move the High Court for necessary justice and appropriate relief.
