In a decisive move to protect Goa’s fragile coastal ecosystem, the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has issued a directive for the demolition of several unauthorised structures in the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) area of survey no 135/7 at Vaddy, Candolim.

The directive mandates the demolition of ground plus two structures and 14 shops within 30 days.

The action comes after the coastal authority observed significant environmental damage caused by the illegal constructions on the property.

To mitigate further harm, the GCZMA initially ordered the sealing of the property and instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) and the electricity department to disconnect water and power supplies.

Subsequently, responding to a request from Vernon Rodrigues, the respondent, the coastal authority temporarily lifted the seal.

However, upon discovering the absence of any permissions granted by the Authority for the structures, the GCZMA reaffirmed its stance on the demolition.

The GCZMA categorises the situation as a clear violation of the CRZ notification and insists on the demolition of all offending structures to restore the land to its original condition.

An inspection report by the Authority revealed the presence of two ground plus two buildings covered with metal roofing sheets, along with 14 shops situated on the ground floor.

Additionally, ongoing construction activities included a ground floor structure with RCC slabs, beams, and column foundation, as well as an open underground construction with RCC walls.

Under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the GCZMA has directed the respondent to demolish the structures and restore the land within the stipulated 30-day period.

Furthermore, the Authority has tasked the Deputy Collector and SDO Bardez with verifying the demolition and submitting a compliance report.
