Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte had a meeting with Housing Minister Sudin Dhawlikar and the Chairman of Goa Housing Board (GHB) Jeet Arolkar regarding allotment of shops and offices in the new market constructed by GHB at Porvorim.
Later while briefing press persons, Khaunte mentioned that he has advised the Goa Housing Board to shift the shopkeepers from the unhygienic old market to new market complex as soon as possible and complete the process before the Ganesh Chaturthi .The old market building is in very bad shape and may collapse any time during monsoon. Due to dilapidated and unhygienic condition of the old market, many shopkeepers have stopped their business activities and are eagerly waiting to move in the new market building. Hence Goa Housing Board should formulate allotment policy and shift these shoppers to the new market soon.
30 percent of the shops and offices in the new market complex will be reserved for locals and the remaining shops and office will be sold online . The areas for the fruit and vegetable sellers are already marked in the new market premises. In the second phase, the arrangement for the fish vendors will be made, said Khaunte. Khaunte further mentioned that former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar had assured during laying the foundation stone of the new market building that further commercialisation of the Porvorim will not be done. Although Mall de Goa comes under the jurisdiction of the Saligao constituency, the entire load of traffic is borne by Porvorim .
When the New market will be functional there will be tremendous increase of vehicle traffic on internal roads of Porvorim .The service road is not so wide to accommodate parking of the vehicles .Hence he has suggested that no further exploitation of the land in Porvorim near new market for commercial purpose should be made. With the consent of Chief Minister 3 plots which are located near new market will not be sold for commercial purposes. In regard to NoMo Zo event on service road, the same was not conducted last year because of Covid pandemic.Khaunte said he plans to conduct NoMoZo this year if there is no spurt in Covid cases.
