Taking responsibility for hiking minimum wages

The newly furbished BJP government has had its new ministers  ‘hitting’ the “I can lead’ mode and reeling off gaffe after gaffe. So much ammunition for the Opposition that even D Kamat can’t hide!

The Labour Minister wanted to amend upwards the Minimum Wages Act -- we know it was to benefit his vote bank. This was shot down by the local businessmen's lobby. He also wants to use CSR Funds to install CCTVs in govt offices. Such funds then cannot claim execution under the Company Law and the Auditors must take note. While shooting down the proposed change in the MW Act, what responsibility do they take? On June 2 the Indian govt met representatives of restaurants to sort out the contentious issue of service charges that customers are forced to pay when eating out and now also for home delivery. Did you know, the service charges are not mandatory, and you can pay for only ordered items?

Tips originated during the early 60s when restaurants were struggling and in fact paid less than the minimum wages when tips were received. Now, restaurants still pay their staff less saying they will get tips. This is not fair.  It is their job to pay their staff and not push 10 to 15% to customers. Do people give tips to nurses, plumbers, electricians, taxis? Next time you meet a restaurateur you might ask him to run an honest business.
