Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim has now been equipped with a dedicated, state-of-art plastic surgery and burns unit.
Set up by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation, the ultra-modern burns unit is capable of successfully treating severe burns of up to 70 per cent.
The unit was inaugurated in the presence of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, who informed that while the cases of up to 30 per cent burn injuries will be treated at the existing burns unit attached to the surgery department, only the advanced and severe cases will be handled at the 12-bedded new unit. Of the 12 beds, six beds have been equipped with isolation facility.
“Recruitment of staff and qualified nurses is being carried out for the new burns unit. GMC gets around 15 cases of severe burns each month and this unit will nurse them back to health,” Rane stated. He also informed that the unit is linked with KLE Hospital and that quick transportation has been made available in case the need to carry out certain advanced tests arises.
Meanwhile, the Health Minister also announced that GMC is in the process of setting up a new department of oncology so as to combat the rise in cancer patients. “The file has been moved to the Chief Minister’s Office for appointment of Dr Anupama Borkar as chief consultant for oncology

Organ harvesting: Health secretary
acted against law, says Vishwajit
PANAJI: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday cracked the whip on health Secretary Ashok Kumar for having unilaterally permitted Manipal Hospital to harvest the organs of a brain-dead patient on April 7. Rane said the health secretary acted against the law in allowing the organs to be transported to Mumbai, without consulting the organ transplant committee of the State government. “Health secretary had no power to give unilaterally permission to Manipal Hospital for organ transplant. His decision bypassed the committee and the health minister. His role will be investigated by me and the committee. Bureaucracy has to remain limited within the operational aspects. This was absolutely illegal. Bureaucracy cannot cross rules and barriers set. Organ transplant cannot be permitted through one phone call,” Rane stated.
