Both Goa MPs of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday voiced strong support for the Centre’s decision to introduce 20 per cent ethanol-blended (E‑20) petrol.
Union Minister Shripad Naik said ethanol-blended fuel is the need of the hour and welcomed the move, stressing that no complaints have been received so far.
“If any issues are reported, the government will take appropriate action,” he assured.
Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade described E‑20 petrol as a practical alternative amid rising fuel prices and shortages.
He said ethanol blending benefits consumers and reduces India’s dependence on imported fuel.
“The Centre’s decision to promote it is a positive step,” he said.
Their comments came at separate public events on Thursday in Goa and the timing is significant, as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a campaign at petrol pumps to mobilise public opposition to the imposition of E‑20 petrol across the State and the country.
The Centre has been pushing ethanol blending as part of its broader energy security and climate goals, claiming that it reduces carbon emissions, supports farmers by creating demand for ethanol derived from crops, and cuts the import bill for crude oil.
While the BJP MPs defended the rollout, those opposed to it highlight consumer concerns, claiming the new fuel can affect vehicle performance and damage engines.
