The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast on Wednesday stating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall (115.6 - 204.4 mm of rainfall in 24 hours) in Goa till June 18, with scattered and isolated spatial distributions.
“Winds of speed 40-50 kmph is likely along with rainfall spells. Intense spells for a short duration are also very likely in both the districts of Goa during this period,” stated the IMD forecast.
Meanwhile, rains lashed the entire State for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. Many areas across Goa including approach roads were inundated with water. Trees and electricity polls collapsed at many places disrupting the power supply. A nearly 150-metre long under-construction walkway-cum-retaining wall collapsed at Orlim. Locals alleged that substandard work done by GSIDC was the cause of the collapse.
IMD has cautioned citizens over possibilities of localized inundation, flooding of low-lying areas and urban areas, landslides, mudslides and rockfalls in vulnerable areas, disruption to road, rail, air and ferry transport, rough sea conditions along the coast, the possibility of flash flood in ghat areas.
