Commuters from Belagavi have lauded the initiative of Goan authorities in cleaning roadside gutters at Chorla Ghat.
The initiative will help in draining out water from the ghats inundating the ghat section, thus enhancing safety of commuters in the rainy season.
Goa's PWD has hired a contractor from Karnataka to undertake the cleaning work that commenced last week. Under the supervision of Basappa, about 20 workers from Karnataka are clearing the gutters on either side, burning the trash or dumping it into the ghats.
Basappa and his labourers have commenced the work from the Goa border in the ghat and will continue the work till Keri. “The work is expected to be completed before the onset of monsoons,” Basappa said.
It may be recalled that during monsoons, several waterfalls are witnessed at different spots in Chorla Ghat. Heavy rains lead to inundation of the road, making it difficult and dangerous for motorists.
Clearing of leaves and trash thrown by tourists and commuters on either side of the gutters blocks the drainage, due to which the road tends to be slippery.
Commuters have appreciated the initiative by the authorities as timely and necessary, to the extent that commuters from Belagavi too have urged the local PWD authorities to follow the suit and get the drains on either side of the Belagavi-Chorla road cleared like their Goan counterparts.
