All of Goa’s inefficient and sometimes creaky streetlights will be replaced by efficient LED bulbs that are expected to save around ₹18.90 crore of the State government in energy charges each year.
The decision was taken by the State cabinet which met on Friday to adopt the central government’s Street Light National Programme by replacing the ‘highly inefficient’ existing fixtures with 50% energy saving LEDs.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that the scheme would be implemented through the Energy Efficiency Services (EESL), which is the central government approved implementing agency, which will replace conventional street lights with LEDs at its own cost and recover the money over a period of time from the State government.
The total cost of changing the fixtures will come to ₹92.34 crore. The money will be raised by the EESL who will raise 20% through equity while 80% will be borrowed.
“The remaining 80% will be paid back in monthly installments by the Goa Electricity Department from the money they save through lower energy charges as well as no maintenance over a period of ten years,” Parsekar said.
The Government of India’s Street Light National Programme (SLNP) targets to replace 3.5 crore street lights, manifesting in 9,000 million KWh energy savings and 1,500 MW reduction of installed street light load in 100 cities across the country.
The government has also decided to employ 60 junior engineers in the electricity department on contract basis on a salary of ₹17,040 per month in a bid to tide over the shortage of staff in the department.
