The Dhangar community, which has been pursuing Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for over two decades, has adopted a more assertive stance and warned of intensifying its agitation if the long-pending demand is not resolved by August 15.

Community leaders maintained that all procedural formalities required for ST recognition have already been completed and that the matter now rests with the government.

Representatives of the Akhil Goa Dhangar Samaj, the final decision requires political will and timely action from the authorities.

The demand for ST status has remained unresolved for nearly 23 years despite repeated assurances from successive governments. Community members expressed disappointment that commitments made earlier, including assurances that a decision would be taken within a short period, have not yet translated into concrete action.

In this regard, the Akhil Goa Dhangar Samaj has held meetings in South Goa and Kushavati districts where members reviewed the progress of the demand and discussed the future course of the movement. Participants voiced strong concern over the continued delay and unanimously resolved to strengthen the campaign across the State.

The meetings decided to intensify awareness and mobilisation efforts at the village and taluka levels while expanding outreach among community members. Leaders indicated that the movement would enter a more decisive phase if the issue remains unresolved.

Community representatives stated that the government must demonstrate the necessary commitment to ensure that the long-pending demand is brought to its logical conclusion. They cautioned that failure to arrive at a clear decision by August 15 could compel the community to explore alternative democratic means of protest and launch a robust statewide agitation.
