Addressing Swayampurna Mitras, nodal officers, panchayat representatives and grassroots functionaries during a virtual interaction on the 90-day Green Goa campaign, Sawant shared his observations from a recent journey along the state border.
“Yesterday, while returning to Goa from Patradevi, I saw gaddas stationed along the highways with several two-wheelers parked in front of them. This is dangerous as any vehicle can collide with them, creating accident-prone zones,” Sawant said.
He further remarked that such roadside businesses also affect the visual appeal of Goa for tourists entering the state.
According to Transport Department data, the state recorded 217 road accidents in April alone, including 24 fatal accidents resulting in loss of life and 119 non-injury accidents. The data also showed that a significant proportion of fatalities involved two-wheeler riders.
During the interaction, Sawant stressed the importance of public participation in environmental conservation and cleanliness initiatives under the Green Goa campaign.
Sawant reiterated the government's target of planting nearly 10 lakh trees across Goa between June 5 and September 5 as part of a statewide afforestation drive. He also highlighted the Green NH-66 Mission, which aims to transform the Patradevi-to-Canacona stretch into a green corridor through extensive plantation efforts.
Calling for greater civic responsibility, Sawant urged citizens to support cleanliness drives and environmental initiatives to help build a cleaner, greener and more environmentally conscious Goa.
