The roof of the kitchen and the washroom of the house belonging to Upicares Rodrigues Pereira (67) blew after the empty LPG cylinder exploded. According to one Ana Rita, Pereira s neighbour, her daughter was standing at the bus stop when she saw flames behind the house and the next moment she heard a loud explosion. “My daughter rushed to the house to see if Pereira was in the house and after noticing the door locked, she alerted the neighbours,” said Ana Rita. House owner Pereira, a widow, said the incident occurred at about 8.30 am when she was attending a church service. She said she lost some cash and other items, besides furniture. When contacted, Verna fire service in-charge Damodar Pednekar said they received a call at about 8.30 am informing them about the fire. “We managed to douse the fire. The loss is estimated to be around Rs 1.80 lakh,” said Pednekar. He said a fire outside the house meant for boiling water spread inside leading to the blast of the empty LPG cylinder kept in the storeroom.
