Deputy Speaker and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Saturday expressed confidence that the House would unanimously pass the resolution to install Dr Jack de Sequeira’s statue in the assembly complex during the upcoming budget session.
“My private member’s resolution on installing Dr Jack de Sequeira’s statue will come up in the assembly in the budget session and all BJP MLAs will support it,” an assertive Lobo said to The Goan.
“I am confident that the CM will allow the resolution to pass unanimously on the floor of the House,” he added.
Despite his party’s stand to the contrary, the belligerent coastal MLA said that coalition politics would compel the MLAs to vote for the statue.
“The party may have taken a different line. But we are in a coalition government,” he said. To buttress his claim, he further said that while deciding to install the statue of Dayanand Bandodkar, the first chief minister of Goa, the entire House voted in unison.
“If we can take a unanimous decision to install the statue of Dayanand Bandodkar, why can’t we do so in the case of Dr Jack de Sequeira,” he asked.
He said if Manohar Parrikar has become the chief minister of Goa and he an MLA, it was only because of the vision of Dr Jack Sequeira.
When queried what happens if BJP decides to issue a whip to vote against the resolution, Lobo said that his resolution can come up for discussion and it was only during the voting that he will have to toe the party’s line.
