Upset that the government had failed to provide tap water to residents of Kadamba plateau, a rally was staged on Saturday evening to highlight the government’s failure despite repeated assurances by residents.
The residents have now served an ultimatum of three months, failing which they have threatened to take legal recourse in the matter.
The rally started from Navelcar hill city and culminated at Sai Baba temple with over 50 residents participating in the protest march. They were armed with placards demanding tap water, which they said, is their fundamental right.
Later speaking to The Goan, president of Kadamba Plateau Residents Action Committee (KAPRAC) Nilesh Joshi said the people are fed up with continuous failure of the government in fulfilling its promise of providing tap water to the residents. “This rally is an attempt to remind the government of its promises and also to pressure it to release water to the residents, failing which we will resort to legal action as the people have lost their patience,” Joshi added.
Asked about the time frame for the legal action, Joshi informed that residents had met PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar recently and he promised to provide water once a 15 MLD plant comes up at Opa, which he said will take three months to complete. “We have waited for many years and we will wait for another three months,” Joshi informed, but hastened to add that side by side, there will be consultation with legal experts to take the issue to the court in case this assurance also falls flat.
“The people are frustrated over denial of tap water which is a basic right of the people. We are not demanding 24 hours water, but only for one hour,” Joshi stated and blamed the Water Resources Department for failing in tapping natural water resources in the State.
