Demand urgent repairs, citing structural damage

Serious concerns have been raised over the poor condition of a bridge at Potrem ward under the Bhati Village Panchayat in Sanguem taluka, with local residents demanding immediate action before a major accident occurs.
Built nearly 30 years ago, the bridge serves as an important link for residents travelling to Sanguem and nearby areas. However, locals claim that the structure has been neglected for years, with little attention from the Public Works Department (PWD).

The situation has become more worrying as the bridge is located near a sharp bend, posing a risk to both motorists and pedestrians. Thick overgrown bushes on either side of the bridge have further reduced visibility, making the stretch even more dangerous for commuters.
Former Bhati panch Manoj Paryekar expressed concern over the worsening condition of the bridge. He recalled that over a decade ago, during the tenure of former Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar, repair work was carried out on one side of the bridge.
According to Paryekar, Gaonkar had assured residents at the time that the bridge would undergo complete repairs and strengthening work. However, no major work has been undertaken since then, leaving the structure in a vulnerable state.
Paryekar pointed out that parts of the concrete covering the bridge pillars have already broken away, exposing the structure to further damage. He warned that if urgent repairs are not carried out, the bridge could face the risk of collapse in the future.
He also highlighted the presence of low-hanging live electricity cables on one side of the bridge and urged the electricity department to address the issue without delay, citing the danger it poses to commuters and nearby residents.
Expressing frustration over the prolonged neglect, Paryekar warned that he and local youth would be forced to launch an agitation if the authorities fail to take immediate corrective measures.
He has urged the PWD and other concerned departments to take up repair and maintenance work on a priority basis to ensure public safety.
