ROAD REVAMP: Milling work in progress on the main road stretch from Hotel Satyaheera to Hotel Green Park in Mapusa as part of the Rs 5.5 crore resurfacing and hotmixing project.

Roads in Mapusa are undergoing milling for the first time, marking the beginning of a major resurfacing exercise estimated at Rs 5.50 crore. The works, which commenced on Sunday night, will be followed by hotmixing as part of a broader road upgrade plan across the town. The initial phase covers nearly a two-kilometre stretch of the main road from Hotel Satyaheera to Hotel Green Park.

Authorities said the milling of the existing surface is aimed at ensuring better bonding during hotmixing and improving the overall durability of the road. “This key stretch is being taken up to ensure smoother roads, safer travel, and better commuting for residents and daily motorists. The work is being closely monitored to maintain strict quality standards and ensure timely completion,” said Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza.

He appealed to citizens to cooperate during the execution of the project, stating that the government is focused on improving connectivity and road infrastructure across Mapusa.

In addition to the main stretch, the road from Union Pharmacy up to Milagres Church will also be taken up for milling and hotmixing. Some internal lanes in the Angod area are likewise expected to undergo resurfacing.

However, several roads within the Mapusa market remain in poor condition, and there is no official clarity yet on whether these stretches will be included in the current phase of hotmixing works.

The resurfacing drive comes after a gap of more than two years without major roadworks in the town. Notably, the large-scale hotmixing initiative is being undertaken with municipal elections due in about two months and the Assembly elections less than a year away.
