MARGAO
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas has mulled the setting up of old age homes with five-star amenities for the elders in an era where children migrate abroad for employment and there’s no one back home to look after their parents.
Calling for a change in the thought process that elders are housed in old age homes in their old age, the Benaulim MLA said: “We should not be ashamed that our parents are staying in old age homes. To change the thought process, we should have old age homes with five-star facilities, and with amenities such as wheelchairs, caretakers etc which take care of the needs of the elders in such homes.”
The Benaulim MLA initiated the monthly consultation for old age homes and orphanages in the Benaulim constituency in collaboration with Victor Hospital, Margao. As per the agreement inked with the Apollo Victor Hospital, specialists from the hospital will visit the old age home and orphanages in the constituency every month. After treating the inmates, a profile of their health status will be maintained by the old age home and orphanage. In times of emergencies, the in-charge of the old age homes and orphanages can get the hospital facilities after calling the Hospital head.
After launching the initiative, Venzy said the next step would be to implement the election manifesto promising old age homes with five-star facilities.
