PERNEM
The truck driver, Basant Yadav, who was absconding for the past five days, was finally nabbed by Pernem police in connection with the road mishap at the Mopa Link road at Suke Kulan in Dhargal, where a senior citizen died on the spot and another was seriously injured.
After the truck knocked down the two-wheeler, the driver fled from the accident spot. Police was informed that he is in Jharkhand and so, a Pernem police went to Jharkhand to nab him, but he was finally found in Bhusaval in Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, Goa State Congress President Amit Patkar led a morcha to the Pernem Police station and met Pernem PI Sachin Lokre to protest against their action to book over 200 locals following the fatal mishap, instead of nabbing the truck driver.
Patkar was accompanied by Jitendra Gaonkar, Pramesh Mayekar, Pradip Harmalkar, Vijay Bhike, Virendra Shirodkar, Pranav Parab and others.
Later speaking to local reporters, Patkar said Pernem police should have also registered offences against the said company, transport department and PWD, because they are also responsible for the accident.
Rajan Korgaonkar, head of the Mission for Local group, demanded that Pernem police withdraw the offences booked against the locals.
“The company should be held responsible for the accident. The locals who gathered were neighbours of the deceased Namdev Kambli, who had gone to see him at the accident spot, and it is unfair to have booked them,” said Korgaonkar.
He also said that Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar should not take credit for the insurance to be given to the next kin of the deceased.
