Headmistress of Government High School, Morpirla, Maria Murena Miranda, who has 32 years of teaching experience to her credit has been selected for the State award.
A MSc BEd and hailing from Assolna village, Maria has been working for the upliftment of tribal students in the most remote village of Morpirla in Quepem taluka.
In fact, the school has seen tremendous progress under her leadership. When she first joined Morpirla school, she saw the eagerness in the eyes of students to learn. These students are mostly first generation learners who don’t attend any coaching classes and depend fully on the teachers.
The school has achieved 100 per cent SSC results for five years.
When the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown hit the movement, the headmistress and teachers all rose to the occasion and visited houses of weaker students to guide them and achieve 100 per cent results.
During her stint, she has introduced different innovative ideas for raising the quality of education like online classes, remote learning, art integrated learning using drama, dialogues, songs, role play to make learning joyful, peer to peer learning, use of ICT.
More than a science teacher, Maria has been a friend who breaks down so many barriers that exists between students and teachers. Under her guidance Master Gangesh Velip attended Sakura science programme in Japan, two students won Rs 5,000 each at National level for essay and poster, two students won Inspire award of Rs 10,000 each for their science projects, students passed National Talent and Science Talent Examinations, won District level Science projects.
She was awarded the South Indian Women Achievers Award for Education, Shikshak Vikas award, felicitated by Directorate of Education, TLSCC Quepem, Rajhauns and PTA for getting 100 percent results. She won third place at State level for her essay on Wetlands and Biodiversity.
She attended NISHTHA training conducted by NCERT Delhi and trained nearly 700 teachers as key resource person in Maths and School Based Assessment.
She took initiative and took students on Educational tour to Delhi, Agra, Punjab, Shimla, Kerala, Kolkata, etc.
Maria has dedicated the award to the teachers and students as she feels if she worked hard, they worked harder to achieve success and to all Morpirla parents for having faith in her.
