Navelim p’yats urged to work on door-to-door waste pick-up

MARGAO
The Managing Director of Goa Waste Management Corporation Sanjit Rodrigues has sought the cooperation of village panchayats in Navelim constituency to put the door-to- door waste collection system in place to tackle the burgeoning waste issue.
During his meeting with the sarpanchas of the VPs in Navelim constituency in the presence of Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro, the GWMC Managing Director said the Corporation will
extend all help and cooperation to the panchayats.
He appealed to the local bodies to streamline the waste collection mechanism. "It's not that the village panchayats in Navelim constituency have not initiated the door-to-door waste collection system. Some of the panchayats have indeed made good progress. But there's huge scope for improvement given the size of the village panchayats such as Navelim," Sanjit said.
He lamented that the Rumdamol housing board panchayat has not even handed over a tonne of waste till date. He urged the panchayat bodies to go in for bailing machines on the lines of Benaulim and Varca for storage of dry waste, before vehicles from the Corporation come and lift the waste. "There's a dire need to take the work of door-to-door waste collection systematically. The elected ward member has a task at hand to take the initiative to the logical conclusion," he said.
Saying that other towns and panchayat areas can achieve the feat of Panaji on the garbage segregation front, Sanjit said that Panaji has not achieved the objective overnight, saying it took a decade to put the system in place.
In his address, the Navelim MLA said he would personally get down on the streets after the Navelim village feast along with the panch members and citizens to spread the message of door-to-door waste collection.
Faleiro said that he has initiated a number of measures to clear the perennial dumps in the constituency,
including the Rumdamol housing board, to stop the waste menace.
