MARGAO

In a shocking incident, a new born baby girl was found abandoned in bushes near the Mandopa Football ground, Navelim early Sunday morning.

The baby, however, got a fresh lease of life as she was immediately rushed to the Hospicio hospital, thanks to a group of youngsters who found the baby in the bushes at the Mandopa ground.

The condition of the baby girl is stable, Margao Police station in-charge PI Kapil Nayak informed. The police has obtained an order from the Child Welfare Committee to hand over the child to an NGO based at Dhavli-Ponda, he further added.

It is believed that the baby must have been abandoned by the mother near the

football ground at around 7 am. That the new born baby was delivered earlier in the day was evident by the fact that the umbilical cord was still attached to the body of the infant.

The incident came to light when a group of youngster as usual descended on the Mandopa ground to play football. As they decided to take rest after some time, one of them heard the scream of a baby in nearby bushes. They immediately contacted their friend Vilas Naik, who along with others made their way to the bushes, only to find the baby girl abandoned there. “We informed the police as well as the ambulance about the incident, but since we also were not aware since when the child was lying abandoned in the bushes, I along with friend Suraj Mhato took the baby to the Hospicio on our motorcycle,” Vilas said.

PI Kapil said that inquiries have revealed that the condition of the child is stable and she will be now handed over to the Dhavli-based NGO.

A case under section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act and under section 317 of the IPC stands registered against unknown persons.
