OLD GOA
In a bid to improve traffic along the Merces-Old Goa bypass road, the Old Goa Police have suggested several measures to be taken particularly at the Merces junction and the Chimbel junction.
Speaking to The Goan, Old Goa PI Satish Padwalkar informed that he has submitted his suggestions to the PWD and the road transport authorities.
“From the police point of view, we can make the suggestions but the implementation has to be done by authorities concerned,” Padwalkar added, and stated that a joint inspection of various authorities could be conducted to work out implementation.
MERCES JUNCTION
Taking up the traffic issues faced at the Merces junction, Padwalkar stated there is a lot of confusion being created due to the intersection of multiple roads.
“For instance, traffic approaches from Atal Setu, from Panaji, from Old Goa, from Alua-Merces road, from Santa Cruz service road, etc,” Padwalkar informed, while adding that the use of Artificial Intelligence Solution has helped a lot in regulating traffic at the junction.
“But here is a need to regulate the traffic from Alua road and from the Santa Cruz service road with the help of signals as vehicles from these roads enter the intersection at will,” he added and further mentioned that the temporary barricades along the road from Atal Setu to Merces circle and from Panaji circle to Merces circle be replaced with solid dividers.
CHIMBEL JUNCTION
As for the Chimbel junction, Padwalkar said there is need to install solid dividers for at least 200 meters on both sides of the junction so as to segregate the traffic.
He also suggested cordoning of the service and side roads to prevent vehicles from entering the main road.
Padwalkar further suggested the installation of Artificial Intelligence system to control the traffic signal or to change the timing of the signal as per the movement of traffic at different hours.
However, the most important point suggested was the initiating the work on the flyover project at the earliest.
NEURA JUNCTION
Apart from these two main junctions, Padwalkar also batted for various measures to be taken for traffic regulation along the Kadamba road from V2 mall to Neura junction.
Some of the measures included converting the service roads into one-way traffic and cordoning the highway road to prevent vehicles from approaching through intersecting roads. Suggestion was also made to regulate the speed limit with the help of speed guns and challaning the violators.
OLD GOA
At the busy and narrow Old Goa to Corlim road, PI Padwalkar suggested regulation of industrial traffic to avoid peak hours as also early widening of the road or alternate route for the highway.
On the traffic congestion along the Neura junction to Gandhi circle to Old Goa jetty to Dhauji railway crossing, the PI suggested the widening of the roads, clearing of structures along roadsides, defining no-parking areas and installing dividers wherever needed.
Padwalkar also suggested movement inside Old Goa, especially around the Church complexes to be made one-way permanently to prevent traffic congestions.
Padwalkar also made suggestions to be implemented to avoid traffic congestion along the Santa Cruz overbridge to the GMC junction.
