PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar announced that he would increase education spending to more than 5% of the State GDP over the next five years, step by step with an aim to take it to 6%.
"We are spending Rs 2,175 crore on education, which is 13.30% of budget and 3.09 of the GDP of the state. I will take it to 6%. We will at least cross 5% of the GDP on education in the next five years," Parrikar said.
Parrikar also said that the State is spending more than its share on mid-day meals and it was up to the Parent Teacher Associations to bring to the notice of the department if the food was not up to the mark.
"Presently the Chairman of the PTA has to sign the book. If it is not of good quality, and not on time he should not sign," Parrikar said adding that he was also thinking of a rating system and if the food supplier is continuously rated negatively he could have his contract cancelled. Conversely if his food and service is good, he can even get a bonus, Parrikar announced.
